Duane moved a step closer to securing the runners-up spot with a 1–0 victory over Scott on Tuesday morning, taking out 14 on double seven to complete a 20-dart leg. The three points lift him to 55 from 26 matches and put a clear prize on Thursday’s meeting with Duncan: win that match and second place is guaranteed.

The early scoring belonged to Duane. An opening 70 was followed by 81, with treble 20 helping him reach a finish after just six darts. Scott answered the first visit with 69 of his own, but a follow-up 24 left him on 108 while Duane was already looking at 50. Two strong opening visits had given Duane the first opportunity to take control of the finish.

Converting that advantage proved harder. Duane’s next visit reduced 50 to 40, but three misses left the door open. Scott moved from 108 to 71 and then to 55, gradually closing the gap while the winning double remained elusive. Duane eventually worked his way down to 14; another scoreless visit meant the result was still in doubt.

Scott’s last opportunity came from 53. Double 18 reduced that to 17, but his next dart landed in treble 17 and bust the visit, returning him to 53. The recorded 87 was a bust total, not points taken off his remaining score. Duane then missed with his first dart before finding double seven with his second to finish the contest.

Duane ended with a three-dart average of 30.15 from 20 darts, against Scott’s 26.12 from 17. His 81 was the highest non-bust scoring visit of the match; Scott’s best scoring visit that reduced his total was his opening 69. There were no recorded 100-plus visits or 180s. The decisive numbers were the 14 Duane checked out and the 53 Scott still needed.

The result guarantees Duane a place in the top three. Angus can reach only 54 points, already one fewer than Duane now holds, leaving Duncan as the only player who can displace him from second. Duncan has 48 points from 24 games, with four matches remaining and a maximum of 60. Duane has two games left, against Duncan and champion Gary, and can finish on 61.

Thursday 15 October is therefore the key fixture. A Duane win over Duncan would take him to 58 and cut Duncan’s maximum to 57, settling second place immediately. A draw would keep the race alive, while a Duncan victory would leave him capable of reaching 60 against Duane’s maximum of 58. The championship belongs to Gary, but the battle directly behind him still has a decisive head-to-head to come.

For Scott, the defeat leaves him on 43 points from 27 matches, with one league game remaining. His opening 69 kept him close enough to take advantage of Duane’s difficulties on the doubles, but the late bust ended that chance. Duane had to wait for the finish; when double seven finally arrived, it brought both the match and the runners-up position within much clearer reach.
